At 90 years young, Nando continues to inspire everyone around him with his energy, dedication, and passion for sport.
Born in Italy, Nando moved to the UK in 1964 and began his refereeing journey in 1982. His first formal match took place 44 years ago when Bedford Queens faced Bedford Wanderers — and from that moment on, his incredible legacy began.
On his 90th birthday, Nando refereed what may well have been his final game at Wellingborough RFC, overseeing the match between Wellingborough Vets and East Northants Vets. An extraordinary milestone for an extraordinary man. He believes he may be the world’s oldest rugby referee — and we wouldn’t bet against him! 🏆
Even more remarkable, Nando has refereed matches involving three generations of his own family — including his father, himself, and his son. That’s not just commitment to the sport — that’s a lifetime of passion passed down through generations.
And he’s not slowing down. Nando has generously offered to help develop younger referees at WRFC, continuing to give back to the game he loves.
Of course, some traditions never change:
“I enjoy a Guinness and a banana after a game. Nothing has changed — I’m still having them.”
From all of us at the gym, Nando, thank you for showing us what dedication, resilience, and true passion look like. You are an inspiration to every member
